PHCA/CALM Congratulates Teresa Osborne and Karen Murphy Upon Confirmation as Cabinet Members

HARRISBURG — The Pennsylvania Health Care Association/Center for Assisted Living Management (PHCA/CALM) congratulates Dr.  Karen Murphy, who was confirmed Wednesday as secretary of the state Department of Health and Teresa Osborne, who was confirmed as secretary of the state Department of Aging.

“We look forward to continuing to work with Secretary Murphy and Secretary Osborne on the many funding and policy issues that affect Pennsylvania’s seniors” said Stuart H. Shapiro, M.D., CEO of PHCA/CALM. “Having worked on the front lines, Secretary Murphy and Secretary Osborne understand that these are challenging times for Pennsylvania seniors and those who provide their care.

“Governor Wolf was fortunate to have recruited Ms. Osborne from the Luzerne/Wyoming Counties Area Agency on Aging. The state of Pennsylvania has also gained a tremendous asset in Dr. Murphy, considering her extensive background in health care administration in both the public and private sector.

“We appreciate their willingness to work with all stakeholders to assure the safe delivery of quality health care for all commonwealth citizens. As Acting Secretary, both individuals have already shown that they understand the department, understands its broad missions and have the skill sets necessary to be its Secretary,” Dr. Shapiro said.

Pennsylvania’s population is aging rapidly and the demand for long-term care services is growing, especially among residents and patients who have higher acuity levels, more complex medical needs and chronic health conditions that require around-the-clock care.

“We are confident that both Secretaries will lead the commonwealth to provide top-quality programs and services that benefit the health, safety and well-being of all Pennsylvanians,” said Dr. Shapiro.
