A-25: Fentanyl Fantasies: Keys to Save and Effective Pain Management and Opioid Use in LTC Continuum
The presenter will discuss the diverse issues that so often affect safe and effective pain management and opioid use; for example, the importance of defining causes and characteristics of pain and deciding what to do when staff, residents, or families request specific pain medications that may not be indicated or may be causing complications. He will also consider how prudent opioids use can improve multiple outcomes, including pain quality measures and fewer falls and behavior problems. Even when we believe that a patient could do well without opioids, or with lower doses or fewer opioids, it is a major challenge to figure out when and how to taper or stop these medications. Part of the session will cover a process to prudently and successfully taper opioids.
