Are boomers ready for the cost of long-term care? A Congressional Quarterly article recently stated that nearly 70 percent of those turning 65 this year will need some kind of long-term care in the lives. Unfortunately, most Americans believe — wrongly -- that Social Security, Medicare, private health insurance or Medicaid will cover the cost of that care. Whether someone needs home care or nursing home care, the cost can be catastrophic on a family’s finances if they haven’t planned for it. PHCA can talk with reporters about the cost of long-term care in Pennsylvania, who pays for what, and why it is imperative that individuals consider this expense as they plan for retirement.

How to choose a quality personal care home (assisted living) or nursing home. It’s an unsettling — even scary — decision: having to choose a long-term care facility for yourself or a loved one. How do you know which ones provide compassionate, quality care? PHCA can provide tips on the questions you should ask an administrator before moving a loved one into a facility, things you should look for inside the facility, and how to interpret data on state inspection reports.

How to transition a loved one from home to a personal care/assisted living home or a nursing home. Transitioning a loved one from home to a long-term care facility can be a challenge for both the individual and the family, and it is perfectly normal to experience feelings of fear, anxiety and guilt even though the decision is the best one for the health and safety of the individual. Talk with PHCA members about how to make the transition a successful one for everyone involved.
